To date, we’ve worked as architect, interior designer and design advisor on 75 purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) projects across the UK: new build, retrofit and refurbishment.
Students have gone from users to consumers in the space of a generation, but much of the existing stock was built for a student who no longer exists. Our research shows that big, airport-lounge common rooms leave residents feeling adrift and exposed, becoming the preserve of the most extroverted. What actually gets used are smaller, defined, domestic-scale spaces students can make their own.
We know how PBSA buildings are marketed, operated and used, because we’ve studied the sector and worked alongside the teams who do all three. That has meant strong working relationships with most of the key consultants and contractors in the sector.
With operators including Unite, iQ and Yugo, we’re often engaged between the brand team and the delivery team: making sure the building that gets built is the building that was promised, through procurement and construction.
